This Bodhisattva was named this way because of the custom of worshippers splashing (“kake”) the statue with oil (“abura”) during prayer. Of the various theories behind why oil is splashed on the statue, the generally accepted theory is that it should bear the brunt of misfortune. It was originally built about 1300 years ago, and people nowadays do not splash it with oil.
