Goryo shrine

This shrine has its origins dating back to the ninth century. In the Meiji period(1868-1912) a puppet theater was located in the grounds and people enjoyed “Goryo” puppet theater here. This shrine helped build the most spectacular age in the 200-year history of traditional Japanese puppet theater, and produced living national treasure puppet masters and “shamisen” players.
