Sadaichi Gassan was born in 1836 and was a sword smith. Even after the decree abolishing the wearing of swords in 1876, he continued to make sacred swords. In 1906, he was appointed to the Imperial Art Board, the highest honor for a sword smith. Even now the Gassan family is handing on its skills in sword making in various regions of Japan.
