Doton, who was involved in the construction of Osaka Castle, was given the land that makes up the present Dotombori area, which was a wasteland at the time, by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

In the year 1612, Doton began excavating this land using his own funds. He perished in the Summer War of Osaka, but his cousin Doboku carried on with the work by command of Matsudaira Tadaaki, the lord of Osaka Castle. The canal was completed in 1615 and it is said that it was given the name “Dotombori” in honor of Doton and the work he did.

In 2014, an unveiling ceremony was held to commemorate the restoration of the Success Monument of Yasui (Nariyasu) Doton & Doboku

Today, sightseeing boats run up and down the Dotombori River, shops line the both sides, and many people enjoy the riverfront promenade.

In 2015, 2,025 people gathered in Dotombori to dance the Bon Odori while wearing yukata, successfully setting a Guinness World Record.”

The stone used for the Success Monument of Yasui (Nariyasu) Doton & Doboku is a stone that was meant to be used for the wall of Osaka Castle. It is called the “Zannen-ishi” (“sorry stone”) because it was not actually used for the castle wall.
The large monument has a height of about 4.2m, is 1.8m long, and 1.5m wide.

The monument shows his name as “Yasui Doton””, but the surname “Nariyasu” is now the accepted name.
