It is said that Hozenji Temple and Chikurinji Temple, which were located in this area, took on the name Sennichidera Temple, and thus the street in front of it became known as “Sennichimae”.
This area was originally a location for temples, graveyards, and execution grounds, but in the Meiji era (1868-1912) the execution grounds were decommissioned and the graveyards were relocated, and the bustle of the nearby Dotombori area spread into this area as well, transforming it into a commercial district.
When Hankai Railway (now Nankai Electric Railway) Namba Station opened in the Meiji era, expansion boomed as theaters and cinemas lined the streets.
Even after the Minami-ku Great Fire of 1912, it remained one of the most prominent areas of the Minami district due to its numerous entertainment facilities. Sennichimae-dori, which today has the Hanshin Expressway running directly above it, was created in the wake of the fire. It was constructed to serve as a firebreak to prevent the spread of any future fires, and also to install a streetcar line.

The Minami Sennichimae Shopping Street area is packed with shops and large commercial facilities.

Minyamin, the mascot of the shopping street, greets visitors who pass through the steep, tiled-roof entryway of this shopping street.

Completed in 1914, Rakutenchi was a comprehensive entertainment facility that was home to multiple theaters, a merry-go-round, a roller skating rink, an aquarium, and an observatory.

The approach to Hozenji Temple from Sennichimae was lined with secondhand stores and sundry stores, which became the origins of Doguyasuji.

The southern area of Sennichimae is at the top of the photograph, where Rakutenchi can be seen.

Sennichimae Doguyasuji has evolved from a place that offers “things” to one that offers “experiences”.
Sennichimae Doguyasuji was originally the approach from Sennichimae to Shitennoji Temple and Imamiya Ebisu Shrine and a collection of secondhand shops lined along the street. The name “Doguyasuji” was said to have been coined in 1882. In the Taisho era (1912-1926), the area shifted its focus to specialty shops offering work tools, and tool rental business also began to appear. In the Showa era (1926-1989), the focus shifted to equipment and utensils for restaurants, which created the current incarnation of Doguyasuji.
Its evolution continues even today, shops offering food display model creation experience and glass art workshops appearing in recent years.
