Tekijuku is a Rangaku (Dutch learning) school founded in 1837 by Ogata Koan. This is where Yukichi Fukuzawa and other prominent Meiji-era figures were educated, and the building still stands today in the Kitahama area of Chuo Ward where it has for more than 200 years (Important Cultural Properties).
Along with Kaitokudo (Merchant Academy of Osaka) established by a group of five wealthy merchants (Godoshi) and Hakuen Shoin which taught Chinese characters to the masses, educational institutions were created by private individuals with a strong desire to improve the world, and those hopes were passed down to the universities that were established afterward. Additionally, many private schools, learning centers, and other educational facilities have been built in the Semba area, and have produced talented individuals who have contributed to fields such as commerce, medicine, and culture both in Japan and around the world.

塾生大部屋

Its establishment was decided in 1880 in response to the desires of local residents. It is the oldest existing kindergarten in Osaka Prefecture. Its building, built in 1901, is the oldest kindergarten building in Japan and is a national Important Cultural Property.

Ogata Koan founded this institution in 1849 together with a large group of doctors. Jotokan served as a base for smallpox prevention activities.

This monument is located on the grounds of the head office of Shionogi pharmaceutical company. Members of the pharmaceutical industry in Doshomachi played a central part to establish an educational institution for studying medicine, which laid the groundwork for founding the Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as the Osaka University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

This school opened in 1872 by the wealthy merchant Masuya who donated his own home. The school closed in 1989 due to a continuing decrease in the number of children.

Construction of this school building was completed in 1916. Its predecessor, Soai Women’s School, was established on the grounds of Kitamido Temple (Honganji sect Tsumura Betsuin).

Ogata Koan (1810-1863) was also active as a medical practitioner, having performed the first vaccination in Osaka.

The Tekijuku way: Eat, sleep, and breathe studying!
Students came from all over Japan to enroll in Tekijuku. Yukichi Fukuzawa stated in his autobiography “Fukuo Jiden” that he bought cheap fish at Temmabashi and used his desk as a cutting board. He was at his desk from morning to evening, even sleeping at his desk through the night.
During the tumultuous times at the end of the Edo period (1603-1867) when the country was torn between opening the country and exclusionism, it was Koan’s educational policies that made it possible for students to focus purely on their studies.
