The Sites of Osaka Town Magistrate's Office(East & West)

“Magistrate’s offices” functioned as the police and law courts of the Edo period (1603 to 1867). The two magistrate’s offices l ocated i n t he E ast a nd W est t ook turns once per month in conducting their duties. Though it was burned to ashes in the great fire of 1724, the East Magistrate’s Office was rebuilt in its original spot. The West Magistrate’s Office moved to where its monument is standing today.
